Physics for Poets

As an undergraduate English major, I wanted to take a physics course because I was fascinated by all the discoveries being made in quantum physics and because I have always had this interest in time and space. My well-intentioned high school guidance counselor had steered me away from physics because I wasn't a good math student. I'm not sure she was correct, especially since she sent me into AP biology which was a big mistake.

In college, I had no room for physics in my schedule and probably would have had issues with the math but I thought I might be able to audit a class. There was a section for non-science majors that was known as "Physics for Poets." I asked the department head if I could audit the class and was told I could not. But it was big lecture hall class and I was sure no one would notice my presence. I went to the first class, got a syllabus and picked certain dates that I would attend. I attened most of the classes. I often wrote poems or notes for poems during class. I even asked and answered a few questions along the way. I skipped the tests and exams, of course. 

I came across an article this past week, "Physics and Poetry in Radical Collaboration," by Amy Catanzano. She writes:
Quantum physics, in my view, uses unacknowledged poetic principles to describe the properties of quantum phenomena such as uncertainty, observation, superposition, and entanglement. In the principle of indeterminacy or the uncertainty principle, a subatomic particle’s future position and momentum cannot be known with certainty, since its present state is measured in probabilities; in poetry, ambiguities that arise from uncertainty can be a form of artistic depth. 

The author is a professor and the poet-in-residence at Wake Forest University, and the author of three books and multimodal poetry projects involving physics. She is the recipient of the PEN USA Literary Award in Poetry and other honors.

Catanzano argues that for art-science connections to reach their full potential, the two fields should be conducted and theorized in union.

Neither physics nor poetry are totalizing efforts leading to absolute truth. When theorized and conducted in union, both fields become far more wondrous: they carry new forms of information and experience, produce new ideas and technologies, and challenge dominant belief systems about the universe. It is the evolution of our questions, and not just our provisional answers, that advances scientific, artistic, and societal progress.

  1. “Science-v-Poetry” or Big Bang” according to the 19th century poet :

    Was Poe the first to propose a revolutionary new vision of our universe?
    Polish poet Juliusz Słowacki [1809-1849] wrote (between 1843/4-1846 – i.e.a few years before Poe’s ‘Eureka’) a mystical prose poem entitled ”Genesis from the Spirit” . If we omit the mystical parts in the poem, we ended up with the following description of the creation of the world:

    “…The Spirit… turned one point… of invisible space into a flash of Magnetic-Attractive Forces. And these turned into electric and lightning bolds – And they warmed up in the Spirit… You, Lord, forced him… to flash with destructive fire… You turned the Spirit… into a ball of fire and hung him on the abysses… And here… a circle spirits… he grabbed one handful of globes and swirled them around like a fiery rainbow… “

  2. How is it possible that a writer, poet or mystic is sometimes able to predict the future or explain the secrets of nature better, faster than scientists ? How to explain this God-given talent ? It has been a topic that has occupied the attention of great minds for centuries… Polish poet Stanisław Wyspiański [1869-1907] explains it like this:

    “I have this gift: I see things in a different way. Not like you, who do not educate your eyes, for whom God has created clichés and stereotypes, You, who, impressed by my art, call me a "prophet" and subject me to schoolboy questions,
    So I took the liberty of taking a mental journey - incognito and somewhere off the beaten track, And suddenly I found myself with my old comrade Muse - and for her, there are no secrets, obscurities, or darkness, as true talent ignores any doubts. And it doesn't matter whether or not the Academies will recognize the importance of my investigations and the details of my research and award me bonuses or medals.… I do not regard knowledge as something so special, as such an unusual thing that would walk on two stilts. Art is of the mind, it can't be manufactured, it is created, and once created by the mind, it is a certainty. That's why I consider my scientific thoughts to be as good as those of people with scientific degrees, and that's why I think that anyone to whom God has given a home, that is, someone who has a good head on his shoulders and gets everything out of his head, it's easy for him to do without many advisors…” / S. A scientist is bound by many strict regulations and protocols. An artist, is much more freer in his approach. This freedom allows artists to penetrate the mysteries of nature in a direct way.
